The Intelligence Management Function (IMF) is a centralised data and analytics division to support prevention-led and client-centric decision making throughout WorkSafe. WorkSafe identifies data & analytics as a critical enabler of the Strategic Plan as it supports:

  • accurately targeting workplaces where the most serious injuries and fatalities are predicted to occur, enabling hazards to be identified and risks controlled before workers are harmed
  • optimal outcomes for injured workers by identifying, as early as possible, when an injured worker’s recovery is not going to plan, enabling tailored recovery support to be provided to those most in need

The Data Science Lead will be responsible for enabling strategic advanced analytics capabilities at WorkSafe Victoria, provisioning specialist, expert advice that addresses the challenges associated with preventing harm and assisting workers’ to recover from any injury or illness. This role is a key position in the IMF that will lead the design and implementation of a scalable data science environment that enables applied data science activities, such as predictive analytics and machine learning, and lead the data science community of practice across the Intelligence Management Function


Key accountabilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of the Enterprise Data Hub data-science environment, a core component of an integrated modern data platform through effective collaboration with IMF and Strategic Delivery stakeholders
  • Lead an agile, cross-functional delivery team to implement a suite of insightful production-grade visualisations, predictive models and advanced analytical outputs through engagement with Strategic Delivery, business and IMF stakeholders
  • Lead the data science community of practice, driving the development and implementation of best practice data science guidelines to improve modelling processes and uplift the analytics community
  • Lead and drivethe collection of new data and supporting the areas of data curation, feature development, and development of interactive dashboards
  • Oversee and develop machine learning algorithms to predict the likelihood of workplace injuries, (e.g. worker outcomes, fraud), to enable Strategic Delivery outcomes

Skills and experience

  • Substantial experience at a leadership level as a subject matter expert that enables management of a team of advanced technical specialists
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a delivery team for projects within a large and complex environment
  • Significant experience working with quantitative and qualitative data using a range of analysis, evaluation and statistical techniques to deliver business insights e.g. hypothesis testing, regressions
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced data science analytic tools in analytic programming languages such as R, Python to perform complex algorithms and predictive models
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using data query languages (e.g. SQL) to query and analyse data sourced from relational databases and other data sources



Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Actuarial or other technical fields)
